The first day starts with an early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco, heading to Mollepata, where you'll enjoy a nutritious breakfast to kick off this adventure. Afterwards, we continue the journey to Soraypampa, the starting point for the trek.
From Soraypampa, we begin the ascent to Humantay Lagoon, a natural spectacle surrounded by majestic glaciers and turquoise waters. After enjoying the scenery and learning about the history of this sacred place, we return to Soraypampa and head to Salkantaypampa, where lunch and the campsite await. The day ends with a hearty dinner and an overnight stay at Salkantaypampa, surrounded by mountains.
Day 2 – Salkantay Pass – Salkantay: At dawn on a new day, Vicuña Expeditions invites you to wake up early and greet the morning with a nutritious breakfast. The fresh Andean air fills you with anticipation for the adventures ahead, energizing your spirit for the journey to come. After breakfast, the journey takes an exciting turn as you depart for the legendary Salkantay Pass. This is the highlight of the day—a trek that promises both challenge and awe. As you ascend, the landscape reveals its unique and unforgettable character. The trail winds through pristine nature, and each step brings you closer to the imposing majesty of Mount Salkantay. The grandeur of the mountains and the untouched beauty of the surroundings leave you mesmerized and humbled by such vastness. At an astonishing altitude of 4,638 meters (15,213 feet), you reach Salkantay Pass. Here, time seems to pause as you take a moment to enjoy the unparalleled panoramic views. You and your fellow travelers celebrate reaching this iconic milestone, sharing smiles and perhaps a quiet moment of reflection on the journey’s significance. After celebrating at the summit, the descent begins. The walk back takes you to more familiar altitudes, allowing you to relax into the rhythm of the trail once again. The path leads to a cozy campsite where a well-deserved lunch awaits. Recharging in this serene setting, you share stories of the day's triumphs and prepare for the final stretch of the adventure. With renewed energy, the expedition continues toward Soraypampa, located at 3,850 meters (12,631 feet). Upon reaching Soraypampa, you find transport waiting to take you back to Cusco. The transition from high-altitude wilderness to the comforts of civilization marks the conclusion of this extraordinary journey. Throughout Day 2, Vicuña Expeditions guides you through varying altitudes—from 3,850 meters to the thrilling heights of 4,638 meters—covering approximately 12 km (7.45 miles) on foot. It is a 2-day trek that combines a visit to the stunning Humantay Lagoon with a hike along the Salkantay Trail, passing through Andean landscapes, snow-capped peaks, valleys, and local communities before reaching Soraypampa or Wayllabamba. It is an intense nature and adventure experience.
The trek lasts 2 days and 1 night. On the first day, you hike to Humantay Lagoon and return to Soraypampa. On the second day, you cross the Salkantay Trail until the endpoint and return to Cusco.
The trek is moderate to challenging, especially due to the altitude and the ascent to Humantay Lagoon. A good physical condition and prior acclimatization in Cusco are recommended.
It includes a professional bilingual guide, transportation from the hotel to the trek's starting point, camping equipment, horses or mules for gear and personal belongings, full meals (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners), water, accommodation in a camp or refuge, first aid kit, and assistance throughout the trek.
It is not strictly required, but it is recommended to have prior mountain hiking experience and good physical endurance to safely enjoy the trek.
The best season is from April to October (dry season). During the rainy season (November to March), trails may be slippery and weather conditions less stable.
It is recommended to bring light clothing for hiking, warm layers for the night, a waterproof jacket, trekking boots, optional trekking poles, a comfortable backpack, headlamp, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, reusable water bottle, energy snacks, personal hygiene items, sleeping bag (optional if not rented), and a camera or smartphone with extra battery.
Overnight stays are in a camp or refuge near Soraypampa (day 1). The second night is either back in Cusco or in accommodation according to the itinerary.
The Humantay + Salkantay 2-day trek does not include Machu Picchu, but it can be combined with a train trip from Cusco or from the end of the trek if you wish to add the visit.
Yes, as long as it is done with an authorized agency. Guides are trained in first aid, and the trek includes an emergency kit and support with mules or horses if needed.
The agency requires a 50% deposit of the total cost of the contracted services. This deposit can be made through any of the authorized payment methods. The remaining balance must be paid 15 days before your arrival in Peru.
